BSP Tips
BSP vs NPT
BSP is parallel thread (UK/EU). NPT is tapered (USA). They are NOT interchangeable — even if they appear to fit at first.
Common uses
Hydraulic systems, water lines and compressed air fittings on most UK and European farm machinery.
Spanner variation
Some manufacturer fittings vary slightly — always verify before committing to a size.
BSP Pipe Fitting Spanner Sizes — UK Workshop Reference
BSP (British Standard Pipe) fittings are the standard across UK and European farm machinery, hydraulics, water systems and compressed air. This chart gives you the correct spanner size, outer diameter and thread count for every BSP size from 1/8" to 3".
What does BSP mean?
BSP stands for British Standard Pipe. Most farm machinery uses BSPP (parallel thread) — the thread is straight and seals via a bonded washer or O-ring on the face, not the thread itself. BSPT (taper) fittings are less common and seal on the thread with PTFE tape. Both use a 55° Whitworth thread form but are not interchangeable for sealing. BSP is completely different to NPT (the American tapered standard) — even if NPT appears to thread into BSP at first, the seal will fail.
Most common BSP sizes on farm machinery
| BSP Size | Spanner | Typical use on farm machinery |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" BSP | 19 mm | Hydraulic pressure gauges, test points, small unions |
| 3/8" BSP | 22 mm | Small hydraulic lines, unions, return ports on valves |
| 1/2" BSP | 27 mm | Most common tractor hydraulic connection — spool valves, rams, SCV ports |
| 3/4" BSP | 32 mm | Main hydraulic feeds and return lines, power steering circuits |
| 1" BSP | 41 mm | Large-bore hydraulics, pump inlets, water headers |
| 1-1/4" BSP | 50 mm | Slurry pump connections, large water supply fittings |
How to stop a BSP fitting leaking
The most common BSP leak cause is using PTFE tape as the primary seal on a parallel (BSPP) fitting — it does not work reliably. Parallel BSP fittings seal on the face, not the thread. Always fit a correct-sized bonded (copper/aluminium) washer or check the O-ring is present and undamaged. For BSPT tapered fittings, 3–5 clockwise wraps of PTFE tape on the male thread is the correct method.
BSPP Parallel
Bonded washer or O-ring face — NOT PTFE on thread
BSPT Taper
3–5 wraps PTFE tape clockwise on male thread
ORFS
O-ring into machined face seat — no tape needed
Buying a spanner set for BSP work
A standard metric open-ended or combination spanner set covers most BSP work — BSP spanner sizes are metric (mm) even though the fitting sizes are described in imperial inches. For a farm workshop the critical sizes are 19, 22, 24, 27, 30, 32, 36 and 41 mm. Most quality 21-piece metric sets cover up to 32 mm; for 1" BSP (41 mm) and above you need a separate large spanner or a good adjustable.
- Chrome vanadium (Cr-V) steel is the minimum for workshop use — avoid cheap chrome-plated carbon steel that rounds off under load
- Combination spanners (open + ring end) are more versatile than open-ended only for hydraulic work in tight spaces
- Wera, Bahco, Facom and Draper Expert are well-regarded brands at different price points
- A 1/2" drive socket set with deep sockets covers many BSP hex fittings faster than a spanner in open spaces
